Rasmus and Margrethe Hanson West St Paul Antiques
Rasmus Hanson

Born in Vester Kipping, Falster, Denmark, Mr. Hanson emigrated to the U.S. in 1865, first going to Racine, Wisconsin, then Manistee. It was there he married his wife, Margrethe, in 1867. They had 3 sons and 2 daughters. Working his way up, Mr. Hanson became successful in the lumbering industry. In 1878, the Hansons moved to Grayling so Mr. Hanson could get logs from the forests to the Manistee River. He was generous to his community, donating land in 1913 for what is today's Camp Grayling, a Michigan National Guard base, in which guard and reserve units of the other branches of the Armed Forces can train. Mr. Hanson also made possible Mercy Hospital in Grayling. His religious affiliation is the Danish Lutheran Church.

The Hanson House Bed & Breakfast
Built in 1890 as the home of lumber baron Rasmus Hanson and his family, the Hanson House.

The Hanson House Bed and Breakfast has withstood the test of time. Now, as a historic showplace in Grayling, Michigan, the Hanson House boasts many structural and cosmetic improvements that preserve its history and prepare it for serving generations of future guests.

While maintaining the ambience and charm of days gone by, this bed-and-breakfast provides its guests air-conditioned guestrooms with private en-suite bathrooms, large flat-screen TV’s, WIFI, safe electric fireplaces, hand carved mahogany king and queen beds, high end linens, plush microfiber robes, and other luxury amenities. Also included with your stay is a sumptuous candlelit breakfast. Recent renovations focus on improving the comfort of guests while preserving the natural woodwork, 11′ ceilings, tall pocket doors, multiple hand carved oak fireplaces, and elegant staircase of yesteryear.

Imagine spending the night in one of the opulent bedrooms formerly occupied by one of the Hanson family members, or enjoying a delicious breakfast in the grand dining room where many turn-of-the-century dignitaries would have undoubtedly been entertained. Snuggle up with a good book on an antique down filled sofa in the parlor/library, or warm yourself by the roaring fire in the living room fireplace on a cold winter’s eve. In summer months, peruse the lovely gardens and the large plush lawn surrounding this Victorian home. In early Spring aromatic lilacs surround the yard on three sides.  For more Info. click here

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – A 117-year-old furniture factory being considered for loft-style apartments across the street from the new Downtown Market has been added to the National Register of Historic Places by the National Parks Service.

H.E. Shaw Co., according to the National Register.

Originally, about 40 employees made bookcases, ladies desks, music cabinets, dining room sets and Mission-style oak buffets at the factory, which was enlarged twice in its first six years. In 1922 and 1923, additions to the factory more than doubled its size.

The H.E. Shaw Co. closed its doors in 1933, a victim of the Great Depression. The Schoonbeck Co. made upholstered furniture in the northeast section of building from 1934 until 1968, according to the request. The building became a Klingman’s warehouse after Schoonbeck moved out.

Other companies, such as the Luce Furniture Co., the Robinson Furniture Co. and SFS Corp., also occupied parts of the building, too.

At some point in its history, the building was given a brick façade that encompassed all of the six original buildings.

European Revival style
Nineteenth-century American  furniture design

After the Civil War, Americans began to look more closely at the most current high-style designs coming from Europe. While European design had always been influential, ordinary Americans began to tour Europe  more often, and young American architects and designers entered the schools and ateliers there.

The Philadelphia Centennial Exposition of 1876 was instrumental in bringing beautifully designed objects from all over the world to the attention of the American consumer. The exhibits from England and Japan were particularly esteemed. For Americans who wanted to be thought “artistic,” an attribute that was highly valued in the late 1870s and 1880s, “honest” Modern Gothic oak furniture was most favored. This style was popularized by British design reformer Charles Locke Eastlake (1836–1906), in his seminal book Hints on Household Taste (first English edition 1868, first American edition 1872). After the 1870s, taste in furniture grew still more eclectic, and particular styles were no longer so rigidly prescribed for particular rooms. At this time also, home design became the purview of professionally trained architects and designers, who, at their best, created their own more innovative designs rather than depending so heavily on the styles of the past.
